BIO
Samuel Smith is an award winning artist and long time resident of Barbara, CA., currently living in Boston and painting in both locations. He has shown his landscapes locally and nationally in numerous galleries and shows, including the 2016 national American Impressionist Society annual show with top artists from the US. Sam’s art has been featured in Southwest Art magazine, Fibonacci Fine Art, and other art publications.
His style is uniquely described as a melding of early California impressionism with contemporary subjects, although the range of traditional to contemporary landscape has a uniquely broad range of feeling. He has captured the interest of regional and national audiences, after a host of awards in the Santa Barbara area in the past decade, emerging into the collectors market.
After beginning college with an art scholarship and a Fine Art degree at Utah State University, where he was influenced by the work of Glenn Edwards, he studied with or was heavily influenced by a host of California and Utah Artists, among them Brian Blood, Kevin Courter, Paul Ferney, Josh Clare, Mike Malm, Katherine Stats, Matt Warren, and Jeremy Lipking. Influences from past artists include the impressionists, with particular affiliation with the work of Edgar Payne, Charles Warren Eaton, John Singer Sargent, and William Merritt Chase. Sam tells people that the “way to know life is to love many things” (quoting Vincent Van Gogh), and that is represented in the wide diversity of his work.
